💙 BLUE SEPTEMBER — A MESSAGE FOR THE MEN WHO WATCH MY CHANNEL
This September, I'm using my old blue Big Chief tractor to help raise awareness of something that affects far too many Kiwi families — prostate cancer.
I haven't personally been affected by prostate cancer, but I know men who have, both through work and within my own family. So this is something that means more to me than simply putting a blue tractor in front of a camera.
The statistics are sobering. Around 739 New Zealand men die from prostate cancer every year, and 1 in 8 men will be affected during their lifetime.
And there's another reason I wanted to share this message with the viewers of The Big Chief Tractor YouTube Channel.
Looking at my channel statistics, around 50% of my viewers are over 40, and approximately 40% are over 50.
That means a huge part of my audience is right in the age group where having a conversation with your doctor about prostate health is important — particularly if you have a family history of prostate cancer.
Most of us are pretty good at looking after our machinery. If this old Big Chief starts making a strange noise, we investigate it. We don't just say, "She'll be right" and keep driving!
Maybe we should treat ourselves with the same care.
Blue September isn't about frightening people. It's about starting conversations.
If you've been putting off talking to your doctor about prostate health, perhaps September is a good time to make that appointment.
And if you or someone you love has been affected by prostate cancer, I hope you know that you're not alone.
This old blue Big Chief has been looked after for more than 60 years.
