Will you support my ride this Blue September? Let's tackle prostate cancer together

During September I am planning to ride my bike 739 kilometers.

This challenge I’ve signed up for is to raise money for prostate cancer research and support. It’s called Blue September and since last year 739 New Zealand men lost their lives to Prostate cancer – I plan to ride 739 kilometers during September.

So, this letter is a request for you to sponsor me for the 739kilometers.

You could sponsor me in two ways.

For set amount - anything from a single dollar upwards

or cents per kilometer rate

So 1 cent per k = $7.37, 5 cents per k = $36.95 etc.

So why am I doing this. Two reasons –

I ride my bike a lot already – just about every day and cover 10 – 75kms per ride. I love a little challenge, and I can support prostate cancer sufferers, research, causes & cures while keeping fit.

I am also a cancer survivor, not prostate cancer, but squamish cell carcinoma. It just about killed me, it came back 3 times, each time affecting more of my body. I had surgery twice, radiation treatment twice, Palliative care is still the treatment going forward. As part of the palliative care, I had an infusion of Keytruda. Initially it made me more ill, but then over a period of many months slowly very slowly the pain went, I gained strength, regained my appetite and began to exercise on my bike. Scans showed the tumors around my body had either stayed the same size or shrunk. I say the cancer has gone to sleep. So, I feel very lucky, in the last 4 years I’ve seen 4 friends with various forms of cancer pass away. So, I want to give something back and hopefully make the lives of those with prostate cancer already, more hopeful and society as a whole increase the knowledge, causes and cures for this disease that killed 739 New Zealand men last year.

DONE but not done!

Friday 19th Sep

DONE – Yesterday I completed the 739kms I committed to ride in September, I am very pleased, satisfied and truly amazed at the sponsorship I’ve received from acquaintances, friends and family. But I’m not going to stop there – I’m going to keep riding and making a new goal of 1000kms for the month of September!

Just back from a few days in Nelson and did some wonderful riding on the Great Taste Trail while discovering parts of the nelson region I have never been to.

465 Kilometers completed!

Wednesday 10th Sep

After 10 days – Rides all going well and discovering remote corners of Marlborough – So far averaging around 45kms every day – so pleased with progress! Today I began the day fixing a puncture, then I rode up the Omaka Valley to the very end of the road – a farm called Ramshead. Very remote and although having lived a good portion of my life in Marlborough – I’ve never been there! Then another ride further up the Waihopi Valley – completed the riding for the day – I am loving this challenge and so interesting discovering parts of my home province I’ve never been to!

update after 4 days riding

Friday 5th Sep

I planned to ride a different ride every day, and so far I have - averaging around 50kms every day! I've been discovering different mostly remote parts of Marlborough as I amass kilometers. So going well, feeling good and enjoying the challenge so far! Rode up to the end of the Waikokaho Valley yesterday to the beginning of the walk way there.

Grateful and humbled

Wednesday 20th Aug

Here we are 2 weeks before the riding begins - Already I have sponsorship way beyond expectations - so a huge thank you to all my sponsor - I am so grateful and humbled by your generosity. To get ready for the biking in September - I've been doing a pre ride just about every day and in the last two weeks have notched up 390 kilometres to prepare myself for September.

So happy to hear your cancer has “gone to sleep” and that you are finding ways to strengthen yourself while supporting others! You know I married Katy, the woman I met when I was there working with you and Paul. We have an 11-year-old son. I think about you, Wally the Wonderman, pretty often since you were so supportive almost 25 years ago now. Kick some ass, Wally! Much love, my friend-
