Will you support my ride this Blue September? Let's tackle prostate cancer together
During September I am planning to ride my bike 739 kilometers.
This challenge I’ve signed up for is to raise money for prostate cancer research and support. It’s called Blue September and since last year 739 New Zealand men lost their lives to Prostate cancer – I plan to ride 739 kilometers during September.
So, this letter is a request for you to sponsor me for the 739kilometers.
You could sponsor me in two ways.
For set amount - anything from a single dollar upwards
or cents per kilometer rate
So 1 cent per k = $7.37, 5 cents per k = $36.95 etc.
So why am I doing this. Two reasons –
I ride my bike a lot already – just about every day and cover 10 – 75kms per ride. I love a little challenge, and I can support prostate cancer sufferers, research, causes & cures while keeping fit.
I am also a cancer survivor, not prostate cancer, but squamish cell carcinoma. It just about killed me, it came back 3 times, each time affecting more of my body. I had surgery twice, radiation treatment twice, Palliative care is still the treatment going forward. As part of the palliative care, I had an infusion of Keytruda. Initially it made me more ill, but then over a period of many months slowly very slowly the pain went, I gained strength, regained my appetite and began to exercise on my bike. Scans showed the tumors around my body had either stayed the same size or shrunk. I say the cancer has gone to sleep. So, I feel very lucky, in the last 4 years I’ve seen 4 friends with various forms of cancer pass away. So, I want to give something back and hopefully make the lives of those with prostate cancer already, more hopeful and society as a whole increase the knowledge, causes and cures for this disease that killed 739 New Zealand men last year.
