Today I kicked off my Blue September challenge and smashed out 127 push ups. Not going to lie, the arms are already feeling it, but it feels good to start strong.
I’m doing this for a reason that’s bigger than me. In New Zealand, around 4,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year. That’s about 10 Kiwi men every single day. So while I was counting off my push ups today, I couldn’t help but think about those ten men and their families, hearing the words no one wants to hear.
For me, this challenge is personal. I’m not a fitness junkie or a professional athlete. I’m just a Kiwi dad who wants to turn sweat into something meaningful. Cancer doesn’t just exist out there somewhere. It hits homes, it takes uncles, brothers, sons, dads, and mates. That’s why my goal this month is 2,217 push ups. That number is three times 739, to honour both the 739 Kiwi men we lose to prostate cancer every year and the harsh truth that 1 in 3 of us will face cancer in our lifetime.
My fundraising target is $739. Every dollar represents one of those men who should still be with us. Your support means more than just helping me keep count of push ups. It means funding life saving research, supporting families through diagnosis, and making sure more blokes know to go get checked early.
And that’s the message I want to hammer home as much as the push ups: mates, go see your GP. Talk to your doctor about a prostate cancer check. Early testing saves lives.
So that’s Day 1. 127 push ups done, plenty more to come, and every rep a reminder of why I’m doing this. Thanks for backing me, thanks for caring, and remember - together we can push back against prostate cancer. Every dollar counts please donate if you're in the position to.
