With statistics like 1 in 8 men will develop prostate cancer in their lifetime, 739 men on average every year will die from it - but what is just as scary, 61 % of prostate cancer sufferers will have no symptoms prior to being diagnosed. Based on these stats alone it is evident how important raising awareness of this silent killer is and encouraging all men to get regular checkups.
Some might recognise Mark from his recent endeavour that he has undertaken with his wife Alene by purchasing the Woodbury Cafe in March 2024. Although he is usually found hiding behind the coffee machine while his wife is cooking up a storm in the kitchen, they both have really enjoyed the friendly faces and new friends they have made since taking this latest challenge on.
Mark is no stranger to a challenge or the effects of cancer having been diagnosed and won the battle against cancer Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in the last 5 years himself. This experience with having had the debilitating disease of cancer and undergoing the treatments involved to beat it has given Mark the life changing glimpse of not only how precious life is, but just how unsuspecting one can be of cancer's symptoms on an otherwise fit and healthy body - hence the importance of regular check-ups.
Mark's 4000 km challenge is a mammoth undertaking reflective of the fight he undertook with his personal battle against cancer. He is both proud and grateful to be able to represent the cause 'Blue September' having watched loved ones suffer from this disease and grateful to have lived through his own personal battle with cancer and be able to show just what the body is capable of - if you don't give up.
