Blue September was launched last night in true blue style at the Blue September ‘Blue Tie” launch party at SKYCITY’s Club Lounge. The night was decked out in all things ‘blue’, from a blue carpet in the entrance, to blue sequined curtains, a blue fountain of pomegranate juice and blues music crooning the night away.
Samoan fire dances sparked off the night with a focus on the dire statistics that see our Maori and Pacific Island men rank with the highest mortality from prostate cancer of men anywhere in the world. MC Shane Cortese then announced that Blue September have made Mana Samoa their official adopted rugby team to support.
The major theme for the evening however came through in key note speaker John Bongard’s address – men, make sure you are around for your kids and your grand children.
“I thought I was 10 foot tall and bullet proof... but then I realised as long as I was 6 foot tall for my kids that is what matters. If I can encourage just one man through this to go and get a PSA check, then I will be a happy man”.
MC Shane Cortez also asked all the father’s and grandfather’s in the room to put their hand up and exhorted them to go and get regular checks if they don’t already, admitting that he has been inspired to do so.
A riveting charity auction ensued, conducted by first time auctioneer Mike Peru who entertained the audience with his hammer and charm.
One of the night’s highlights was definitely the “Blue Photo Booth” where guests throughout the night got creative with an array of blue props, all vying for the spot prizes for “best photo”.

Among them was Rugby Union player and “Fight For Life” fighter Slade McFarland, and his mates Ron Cribb and Malua Tipi, who were also celebrating Slade’s birthday.
Long time Blue September supporters Buck Shelford and Frankie Stevens were also in attendance.
